This weekend marked a huge milestone after nearly a year of recovering from the health challenges that almost claimed my life last year. For those who know me, you'll understand why this is such a significant moment and why I’m sharing it here on my blog. And for those who don’t, here’s my story.
When I first got sick, I weighed 154 lbs. Over a decade of illness, 7 spinal surgeries—4 of which were fusions—and countless struggles, my weight reached its peak at 250 lbs. I spent those years consumed by anger over my diagnosis and what I felt I was losing, completely forgetting how to live or even function. But after a near-death experience last year, I decided I’d had enough and was ready to reclaim my life from Ankylosing Spondylitis. After 12 weeks of bed rest and relearning how to walk, I vowed never to stop moving forward—and I haven’t.
I’ve since lost 100 lbs and kept it off for months. This weekend, I took the symbolic step of donating the bags of clothes I’d shrunk out of, clearing them from my house as a permanent reminder that I’m never going back to where I was. I now weigh less and move almost as well as I did before I got sick.
This journey has shown me that I’m capable of anything when I set my mind to it. My brain has become my most powerful ally, alongside my amazing spinal surgeon who reached me when I felt unreachable.
